Why do we love fiction?

Why is there a strong inexplicable pull towards fictional or fantasy characters and their stories? We sit on the edge of our seats whether it’s a fast paced thriller or an exciting romance, waiting for a happy ending. We wait for the following week just to find out what happened next in our favorite TV soap. We find it difficult to put down a book till late in the night giving up a peaceful night’s sleep. Why do we experience the intensified and overwhelming version of emotions for fictional characters while we are aware all along that they don’t really exist? I wonder if it is just because the thrill of waiting for a happy ending somehow manages to transport us away from the struggles of a mundane life and reinforce the concept of optimism.
